A tungsten filament wound into a standing coil on two support posts, coloured from a black-body curve so its glow runs dull red at the cold ends and white at the hot centre while heat waves travel the wire; it rests as a loose open spring and winds into a tight coil and then a dense coiled coil as the spectrum brightens.
